FAQs About the CFA Program

The CFA Program is a three-level finance credential administered by CFA Institute. It covers investment analysis, portfolio management, financial reporting, ethics, and related topics.

Candidates who pass all three levels and meet the work experience requirements earn the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

The CFA Program has three levels: Level I, Level II, and Level III. Each level has its own exam and builds on the previous one. You must pass them in order.

Start with Level I. You cannot sit Level II until you pass Level I, and you cannot sit Level III until you pass Level II. All candidates must begin with Level I, regardless of their finance background.

You can qualify through a completed bachelor's degree, undergraduate student eligibility based on your graduation timeline, or a qualifying combination of professional work experience and higher education.

A valid international travel passport is also required. Check CFA Institute for the current requirements before registering.

CFA exams run in scheduled windows during the year. The available windows depend on your level and location. Check the CFA Institute exam calendar for current dates and registration deadlines.

CFA Institute approves two calculator families: the Texas Instruments BA II Plus and the Hewlett Packard 12C, including approved variants of each.

Read our CFA Calculator Guide for more details.

Most candidates plan for several hundred hours of study per level. The time you need depends on your finance background, your weekly availability, your exam level, and how early you start. A study plan that includes lessons, practice questions, and mock exams will help you use that time well.

Not always. Some candidates use the official curriculum alone. CFA exam prep courses are worth considering if you want a structured study path, more practice, mock exams, and a way to track your progress.

The goal is not to add more material. The goal is to help you use your study time better.

KeyPoint Learning study packages include CFA lessons, study materials, practice quizzes, mock exams, and progress tracking. Package details may vary by level and option.
